Shouldn't Hypocrisy Have a Limit?

Thursday, December 29, 2005
I find it quite hilarious that right-wingers are coming out and posting articles about how impeachment would "backfire" against the proponents of impeachment.

First of all, if these wingnuts actually thought impeachment would backfire, they wouldn't say a word-- they would just let it happen and reap the rewards. They certainly wouldn't be warning their political adversaries, would they?

Second, and probably most telling is, these people are of the same ilk as those who came before the American people years ago and attempted to bring impeachment proceedings against one of the most popular American presidents ever. These people somehow fail to recognize the obvious fact that Bill Clinton had a 73% approval rating at the time they tried to impeach him. Yes, that's right, 73% percent.

George W., on the other hand, is not only violating the law, but he is notoriously unpopular.

These people fail to recognize that the proponents of impeachment aren't partaking in fishing expeditions like Ken Starr. We aren't talking about blue dresses, blow jobs, and older women making secret tape recordings of the conversations of young interns. We are talking about a pattern of lies that took us into a war against a nation that was not an immediate threat (costing the lives of thousands!), illegal wiretaps against Americans, outing CIA agents in order to promote a war, and rampant corruption. We are also talking about a president who's approval rating is now in the sub-40% range.

Sorry wingnuts, but this isn't the Clinton impeachment. We appreciate your concern, but there will be no backfire. Once the House of Representatives is won by the Democrats in 2006, this country will finally have the opportunity to see congressional hearings on all sorts of matters that have been, to date, partially hidden from the American public. In 2006, we get to take the lid off and look inside.

Imagine what the president's approval ratings will look like when that happens!

Backfire, you say? Yeah right.

What Did They Say When Clinton Was Being Impeached?

Tuesday, December 27, 2005
Tom Delay (R-TX):
"This nation sits at a crossroads. One direction points to the higher road of the rule of law. Sometimes hard, sometimes unpleasant, this path relies on truth, justice and the rigorous application of the principle that no man is above the law. Now, the other road is the path of least resistance. This is where we start making exceptions to our laws based on poll numbers and spin control. This is when we pitch the law completely overboard when the mood fits us, when we ignore the facts in order to cover up the truth.

No man is above the law, and no man is below the law. That's the principle that we all hold very dear in this country."

Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.):
"I suggest impeachment is like beauty: apparently in the eye of the beholder. But I hold a different view. And it's not a vengeful one, it's not vindictive, and it's not craven. It's just a concern for the Constitution and a high respect for the rule of law. ... as a lawyer and a legislator for most of my very long life, I have a particular reverence for our legal system. It protects the innocent, it punishes the guilty, it defends the powerless, it guards freedom, it summons the noblest instincts of the human spirit.

The rule of law protects you and it protects me from the midnight fire on our roof or the 3 a.m. knock on our door."

James Sensenbrenner: (R-WI)
:
"What is on trial here is the truth and the rule of law. Our failure to bring President Clinton to account for his lying under oath and preventing the courts from administering equal justice under law, will cause a cancer to be present in our society for generations. I want those parents who ask me the questions, to be able to tell their children that even if you are president of the United States, if you lie when sworn "to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth," you will face the consequences of that action, even when you don't accept the responsibility for them."

Chuck Hagel (R-NB):
"There can be no shading of right and wrong. The complicated currents that have coursed through this impeachment process are many. But after stripping away the underbrush of legal technicalities and nuance, I find that the President abused his sacred power by lying and obstructing justice. How can parents instill values and morality in their children? How can educators teach our children? How can the rule of law for every American be applied equally if we have two standards of justice in America--one for the powerful and the other for the rest of us?"

Bill Frist (R-TN):
"I will have no part in the creation of a constitutional double-standard to benefit the President. He is not above the law. If an ordinary citizen committed these crimes, he would go to jail."

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas):
"When someone is elected president, they receive the greatest gift possible from the American people, their trust. To violate that trust is to raise questions about fitness for office. My constituents often remind me that if anyone else in a position of authority -- for example, a business executive, a military officer of a professional educator -- had acted as the evidence indicates the president did, their career would be over. The rules under which President Nixon would have been tried for impeachment had he not resigned contain this statement: "The office of the president is such that it calls for a higher level of conduct than the average citizen in the United States."

Impeachment Buzz

Monday, December 26, 2005
About.com talks about the impeachment buzz HERE.

"Impeach Bush" is Now Sponsored by Corporate America

Sunday, December 25, 2005
From Barron's:

"Willful disregard of a law is potentially an impeachable offense. It is at least as impeachable as having a sexual escapade under the Oval Office desk and lying about it later. The members of the House Judiciary Committee who staged the impeachment of President Clinton ought to be as outraged at this situation. They ought to investigate it, consider it carefully and report either a bill that would change the wiretap laws to suit the president or a bill of impeachment.

It is important to be clear that an impeachment case, if it comes to that, would not be about wiretapping, or about a possible Constitutional right not to be wiretapped. It would be about the power of Congress to set wiretapping rules by law, and it is about the obligation of the president to follow the rules in the Acts that he and his predecessors signed into law."

Spread the Impeachment Message!

I'm telling you - Daily Kos has been a wellspring of impeachment-related information. Daily Kos diarist Kagro X put up a diary yesterday full of ideas about how you can spread the impeachment message using little more than a color printer and some basic supplies you can get at any electronics or craft store. I've asked for and received permission to repost her work here. I highly recommend, however, that you follow the link to the entire original post and scan through the comments for some great ideas and artwork that you can use for banners (to hang from highway overpasses), bumper stickers, smaller stickers, and lawn/road signs. Talk about grass roots... So read on!

IMPEACH: Guerrilla Marketing Takes Off
by Kagro X [Subscribe]
Tue Dec 20, 2005 at 03:11:40 PM EST

Well, yesterday's diary sure felt good.

In case you missed it, we've decided not to wait around for our elected officials to carry our water for us on the impeachment front. We all know the barriers they face in that fight.

Instead, we're doing what we can -- what anyone can -- just to take the word off the TV, reclaim ownership of it from the necktied wonks, and make it something everyone feels. We're putting it in the public square, and making it something everyone can see is being talked about, everywhere, by everyone.Have you printed your own Do-It-Yourself sign or stickers? Remember, that's the beauty of this idea. You can do it all yourself, anytime you want.

So first, let's mine that earlier thread for the best D-I-Y suggestions.

Wanna do simple, easy stickers?

  • Click here, where Arabiflora has done all the work for you. Just follow his directions (though he uses Times New Roman and I prefer Verdana), and print yourself up a sheet of IMPEACH labels that you can take with you wherever you go.

Wanna have someone do stickers for you?

  • andrewsomething says that Stickerguy.com does decent work, though you may have to wait a few days to get your stuff. Twenty bucks gets you 250 stickers.

Wanna make your own bumper sticker?

Wanna do fancier stuff?

  • You could print up the fancy designs provided by fabooj here, here and here

Wanna do homemade banners?

  • Click here for some suggestions on cheap materials, from Peanut

  • Click here for some tips from Timroff for safely and securely fastening a banner to a highway overpass.

Wanna have someone do a cheap paper banner for you?

  • caliberal says Kinko's will do a 21" long and 15" wide sign for $5.

Wanna spread the holiday cheer?

  • Take a tip from queerbklynboy and get rubber IMPEACH stamps made as stocking stuffers!

Wanna volunteer to do a blog or website for us?

Finally...

Show your work!

I'd really like to get your pictures of what you've done, preferably "deployed," where you plan to have others see it. And I'd REALLY love to have your pictures of your first chance encounter with SOMEONE ELSE'S work. Something as simple as a picture showing that you're participating can be an enormous inspiration to the rest of us, who want to feel like we're part of something real. then, once we start to see OTHER people's work out on the street... fuggeddaboutit!

So take your pictures to the online Photo Chain, something we were turned on to by Avidity, and which should make it easy for anybody to share photos and inspiration with the rest of us.

Check it out. And if you haven't already done it, or are planning to do more, how about joining us for an IMPEACH movement "live blogging" event, wherein participants go out and place their materials, then post photos of them in real time? Coming soon to a diary near you! Like, let's say during your lunch hour tomorrow? Bring a sign and a digital camera to work, and you're in! Or hell, any of you can do the same any time you're ready to roll. That's the whole point.

But whatever we do, we should keep this ball rolling, with something new each day. Soon, we'll be ready to talk about the big stuff: group purchases and placement of large banners; billboards; and maybe, just maybe, that crazy skywriting idea.

Stay tuned, have fun, and remember that when you do it yourself through Daily Kos, we all do it together!

CensureBush.Org is now online

Tuesday, December 20, 2005
From the people at AfterDowningStreet, we proudly introduce CensureBush.org.

Conyers is Second!

Congressman John Conyers has a post up at Daily Kos which outlines a credible initial plan for investigating the appropriateness of impeachment. I'm not kidding. I'm going to cross-post it below. Note that his reasons have nothing to do with the domestic spying - I'm sure there will be room for expansion as circumstances warrant - rather, this is about the Downing Street Memo and the case for taking the US to war in Iraq. Read the whole post below and be sure to visit Conyers' site (linked in the post) for the actual report.

The Constitution in Crisis: Censure and Investigate Possible Impeachment
by Congressman John Conyers [Subscribe]
Tue Dec 20, 2005 at 11:36:36 AM EST

For more information, go to www.johnconyers.com

Cross Posted at Huffington Post and ConyersBlog

Today, I am releasing a staff report entitled, "The Constitution in Crisis: The Downing Street Minutes and Deception, Manipulation, Torture, Retribution and Coverups in the Iraq War.

Before talking about the report, I must express my profound gratitude to the readers of this site, who kept this story alive when no one would cover it, and continued to talk about it after some in the media moved on. Much of the research in this report is a product of the input and hard work of DailyKos, Huffington Post and Conyersblog readers over the last six months (the help with my "timeline project" was particularly useful). I also am so grateful to progressive talk radio hosts and listeners, who have refused to allow the American people to forget the nation was deceived into war.

Now on to the Report and what I plan to do about it. In sum, the report examines the Bush Administration?s actions in taking us to war from A to Z. The report finds there is substantial evidence the President, the Vice-President and other high ranking members of the Bush Administration misled Congress and the American people regarding the decision to go to war in Iraq; misstated and manipulated intelligence information regarding the justification for such war; countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in Iraq; and permitted inappropriate retaliation against critics of their Administration.

The Report concludes that a number of these actions amount to prima facie evidence (evidence sufficiently strong to presume the allegations are true) that federal criminal laws have been violated. Legal violations span from false statements to Congress to whistleblower laws.

The Report also concludes that these charges clearly rise to the level of impeachable conduct. However, because the Administration has failed to respond to requests for information about these charges, it is not yet possible to conclude that an impeachment inquiry or articles of impeachment are warranted.

In response to the Report, I have already taken a number of actions. First, I have introduced a resolution (H. Res. 635) creating a Select Committee with subpoena authority to investigate the misconduct of the Bush Administration with regard to the Iraq war and report on possible impeachable offenses. In Watergate, for example, the Congress did not begin matters as an impeachment inquiry, but investigated matters ? through the Ervin Committee ? and referred impeachable evidence to the Judiciary Committee.

Second, I have introduced Resolutions regarding both President Bush (H. Res. 636) and Vice-President Cheney (H. Res. 637) proposing that they be censured by Congress based on the uncontroverted evidence already on the record and their failure to respond to Congressional and public inquiries about these matters and have never accounted for their many specific misstatements in the run up to War.

As you know, taking these steps means that I am likely to be criticized by the political and media establishments in Washington and attacked by the right wing noise machine. There is a school of thought among Washington political consultants that criticizing the President about Iraq will make Democrats appear to be weak on national security. There is a media establishment that marginalizes politicians for espousing beliefs held by the majority of Americans. The right wing noise machine in turn retaliates against the President's critics.

Be that as it may, I just could not be silent any longer. The title of the report is exactly right: the Constitution is in Crisis. There are serious and well-substantiated allegations that the Executive Branch has usurped the sole power of the Congress to declare war by deceiving the Congress about the evidence for war. There are serious and well-substantiated allegations that the Executive Branch has deceived the American people to manufacture the people's consent for war.

If you agree with me, I am going to need your help like never before. Please go to my website, www.johnconyers.com, where you will find an action center, including a copy of the Report via Raw Story, and ways you can help. Also visit www.censurebush.org to join with other activists who want to move this issue forward.

Senator Boxer is First!

Monday, December 19, 2005
From The Raw Story:

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has become the first in the Senate to raise consideration of impeachment of President George W. Bush for authorizing spying on Americans without warrants, RAW STORY has learned.

In a release issued this evening, Boxer said she's asked "four presidential scholars" for their opinion on impeachment after former White Housel counsel John Dean -- made famous by his role in revealing the Watergate tapes -- asserted that President Bush had 'admitted' to an 'impeachable offense.'

Guerilla Impeachment

Here are some little things we can do to support impeachment.

New Blog Action on Impeachment.

Saturday, December 17, 2005
Let me explain this post a bit in advance. Many of you already know about Daily Kos, the largest political blog on the internet. I actually started blogging over there before I started my own blog, and I frequently cross-post between the two. For those of you unfamiliar with Daily Kos, at any given time, 8 "diaries" (posts) are on the "recommended list" (diaries with broad acceptance by the 73,000+ registered members at Daily Kos.

Today, TWO of the recommended diaries are on the subject of impeachment. I have asked both the diarists for permission to repost their diaries over here - I've heard back in the affirmative from one of them so I will repost below and then add the second diary, if I receive permission, tomorrow.

The first diary is title Dusting off Articles of Impeachment by Daily Kos user Christian Dem in NC, who also has a personal blog: The Christian Dem Home Journal. Below is the diary, and be sure you give the blog a little love in appreciation for the repost. ;-)

Dusting off articles of impeachment
by Christian Dem in NC [Subscribe]
Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 03:38:37 AM EST

Update [2005-12-17 11:16:45 by Christian Dem in NC]: Added that Shrub violated the Wiretap Act as well---thanks, Ben Masel!

Unlike FleetAdmiralJ, I have been on the impeachment bandwagon for a long time. Rather unusual, since I'm one of the few DLCers in here.

I thought it impossible to top keeping Karl Rove on the payroll as the most blatant of his impeachable offenses. But ordering the NSA to spy on American citizens? Come on now--according to the NYT, a warrant is very easy to obtain. But we aren't talking about mere stupidity. We're talking about behavior that has no place in a democracy.

I've had a file of proposed articles of impeachment saved for some time--so I figured now's as good a time as any to dust them off. A draft follows in "There's more"ville--feel free to contribute anything I missed.

Resolved, that George Walker Bush, President of the United States, is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors, and the following articles be exhibited to the Senate:

Articles of impeachment exhibited by the House of Representatives of the United States of America in the name of itself and of the people of the United States of America, against George Walker Bush, President of the United States of America, in maintenance and support of its impeachment against him for high crimes and misdemeanors.

Article 1.

In his conduct while President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duties as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of the United States and to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, willfully, knowingly and without lawful cause or excuse made false, misleading and deceitful statements to the Congress regarding evidence justifying military action against Iraq.

In doing this, George Walker Bush has brought disrepute upon the Presidency, has undermined the integrity of his office, has betrayed his trust as President and has acted in a manner subversive of constitutional government and the rule of law and justice, to the manifest injury of the people of the people of the United States.

Wherefore, by such conduct, George Walker Bush warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States.

Article 2.

In his conduct while President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duties as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of the United States and to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, actively conspired with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and certain other officials of the Government of the United Kingdom to mislead and deceive Congress and the Parliament of the United Kingdom regarding evidence justifying military action against Iraq with the purpose of evading the Kellogg-Briand Pact, the Charter of the United Nations and other treaties signed and ratified by the United States regarding the conduct of war.

In doing this, George Walker Bush has brought disrepute upon the Presidency and the United States, has undermined the integrity of his office, has betrayed his trust as President and has acted in a manner subversive of constitutional government and the rule of law and justice, to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.

Wherefore, by such conduct, George Walker Bush warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States.

Article 3.

In his conduct while President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duties as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of the United States and to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, knew or had reason to know of a decision by the Secretary of Defense to divert funds appropriated for action in Afghanistan to develop plans for action in Iraq, and failed to prevent this action even though said action was contrary to appropriations as enacted by the Congress.

In doing this, George Walker Bush has brought disrepute upon the Presidency, has undermined the integrity of his office, has betrayed his trust as President and has acted in a manner grossly derelict of his constitutional duties, to the manifest injury of the people of the people of the United States.

Wherefore, by such conduct, George Walker Bush warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States.

Article 4.

In his conduct while President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duties as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of the United States and to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, directed the falsification and fabrication of evidence and intelligence supporting the case for military action against Iraq with the purpose of evading the Kellogg-Briand Pact, the United Nations Charter and other treaties signed and ratified by the United States regarding the conduct of war.

Article 5.

Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duties as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of the United States and to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, communicated to the Congress, as per the requirements of Public Law No: 107-243 (Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002) that military action against Iraq was justified because Iraq gave aid and comfort to the perpetrators of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001; even though George Walker Bush knew the evidence that supposedly supported this determination was false and fabricated.

Article 6.

In his conduct while President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, knew or had reason to know of the unlawful disclosure of a covert Central Intelligence agent's identity and failed to prevent said disclosure even though the agent's identity was classified as "secret" and said disclosure caused serious damage to the security of the United States.

Article 7.

In his conduct while President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, failed to take corrective action against the members of his staff involved in the unlawful disclosure of a covert Central Intelligence agent's identity even though the agent's identity was known by George Walker Bush to be classified as "secret" and said disclosure caused serious damage to the security of the United States.

Article 8.

Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, willfully, knowingly and without lawful cause or excuse authorized the National Security Agency to conduct surveillance on American citizens without obtaining a warrant as required by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 and the Wiretap Act.

The Green Party Supports Impeachment (PRESS RELEASE)

Thursday, December 08, 2005
GREENS: IMPEACH BUSH NOW!

GREEN PARTY OF THE UNITED STATES
http://www.gp.org

The Downing Street Memo proves that invasion of Iraq wasn't the 'last resort' but Bush's intent all along, leading to cooked intelligence and other impeachable offenses; Greens note bipartisan and media complicity in overlooking evidence of deceit, urge public protest.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Green leaders reiterated the party's July 2003 call for impeachment of Bush, and called on all Americans outraged by the Bush Administration's list of deceptions, violations of the U.S. Constitution, the disastrous Iraq occupation, and policies that have disgraced the U.S. to demand that Congress begin the impeachment process.

"The invasion and occupation of Iraq has caused the deaths of over 1,600 U.S. military personnel, as well as untold suffering and tens of thousands of civilian dead in Iraq," said David Cobb, the Green Party's 2004 candidate for President of the United States. "The Downing Street Memo confirms what we already knew -- that a conspiracy to deceive the American people led us into the war, and that this conspiracy constitutes 'high crimes and misdemeanors' according to the U.S. Constitution."

The Green Party of the United States called for the impeachment of George W. Bush during the party's 2003 national meeting . Greens have organized and participated in numerous protests against the war since early 2003, and have called for an immediate end to the occupation, cancellation of further war spending, and removal of military recruiters from schools as U.S. troops continue to face death and injury in Iraq.

Greens praised Rep. John Conyers' (D-Mich.) public demand for an explanation from President Bush in the wake of Downing Street Memo's publication, and questioned why so many of the mainstream U.S. media have remained silent on the content and implications of the memo.

But Greens also called many Democrats as responsible as Republicans for Iraq policy, having voted in October 2002 to transfer war power to the President, which created the scenario for White House deceit and abuse of power, and having recently voted for another $82 billion for the war.

"It was already apparent, long before the Downing Street Memo, that President Bush's case for invading Iraq was based on fraud," said Rebecca Rotzler, co-chair of the Green Party's Peace Action Committee. "All of the reasons for invasion that Mr. Bush listed in his January 28, 2003 State of the Union address -- Iraqi WMDs, collusion between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda, evidence that Saddam had sought nuclear weapons materials from Africa, nuclear aluminum rods, Iraq's supposed threat to the U.S. and to other nations -- are now known to be false. The Downing Street Memo shows that the intelligence supporting an invasion was fixed, with the complicity of the Bush and Blair administrations as early as July 2002."

Green Party leaders also noted that Ahmed Chalabi, whose false testimony to U.S. intelligence officials on Iraqi WMDs formed much of the basis of the claim that Saddam Hussein was an international threat, is now serving as interim Iraqi Oil Minister, with the Bush Administration's approval; and that John Bolton, now under consideration for appointment as U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., repeatedly manipulated intelligence and lied to the U.S. media and the U.N. about Iraqi weapons materials.

"Americans should be protesting in every way possible against the continued occupation of Iraq, and for impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney," said Jake Schneider, treasurer of the Green Party of the United States. "But this has also been a bipartisan war all along, and every Democrat and Republican in Congress who has supported it despite evidence of deceit from the very beginning also deserves removal from office."
